Cofounder Impact Coffee For The Future, Social Entrepreneur, Digital Marketer, Ladyboss
Social entrepreneur and cofounder of IMPCT Coffee for the Future, An-Nung Chen’s passion is making a positive impact on the world and to her, success is knowing that she has improved the lives of those in less privileged communities. Like me, An was unfulfilled in her career. Although she was a corporate maven and fashionista – with her master’s degree in fashion merchandising, she worked with big brands in China’s very profitable fashion retail industry (think Louis Vuitton and Armani) – “my heart was not satisfied,” she says. She knew that something was missing, she shares, because “I didn’t feel mentally rich,” but she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was. That is until she joined the International MBA programme at Taiwan’s National Chengchi University and learned about social enterprise.
Taking A Chance On Social Entrepreneurship and Pursuing Success
“Don’t stay in our comfort zone, follow your desire, chase your dream and you will find a new sky.”
In 2015, An-Nung Chen co-founded an amazing coffee company that’s operating out of Taiwan. Now, she’s the only woman on the group with 3 other male founders and she is killing it. Her company is called Impct Coffee for the Future – so, for every bag of coffee you buy, the proceeds go towards building schools for underprivileged kids. It’s an amazing story of how we can use business to solve serious social issues, like access to quality education in poor communities. As a social impact ladyboss, An’s story is a perfect example of how companies with a social impact focus really can make a positive change in the world, while generating profit. If you’re looking for a model or a case study as inspiration for your business visit the IMPCT Coffee for the Future website.
An admits that running a social enterprise start-up takes a lot of sacrifices, time with family and friends for example, and time needed to find a date, she laughs. “I don’t think being an entrepreneur means that you have to sacrifice yourself,” she says. “Life is not only about work.” She explains that her company is all about families and “creating a family is one of the processes that we go through in our lives, especially ladybosses, and I don’t think that’s either an A or B choice.” An-Nung believes that ladybosses have entrepreneurial spirits and hearts for inspiring social change, and if a ladyboss wants to have a family, “they can handle it for sure because they are in charge of their lives and they know their priorities.”
A social enterprise, An-Nung explains, is a company whose goal is to solve social issues through innovation. In contrast to working at a corporation, where the ultimate goal is to generate profit for the company, a social enterprise focuses maximizing social impact.” She knew that this was the missing piece to her happiness puzzle when she and four classmates joined the Hult Prize.
Hosted by the Hult Prize Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, the Hult Prize is the world’s largest social enterprise competition – “it’s known as the Nobel Prize of the business world,” An says – and is targeted at university undergraduate and MBA students. The 2015 challenge was to craft a solution to a major problem faced in urban slum areas – educating young children.
An is a true ladyboss because set herself on the path to success by being open to new opportunities and possibilities. She advises young women hoping to embark on their own journeys to success, that “there are meaningful things waiting for us to explore.
